i like to make collages. i used to make them with paper, before computers were invented. (just kidding. sort of.) you know, paper, scissors, glue, photocopy machine. i recently tried to go back to those archaic methods, just for fun, and it wasn’t fun anymore because i so completely love doing them on the computer now. here is one of my favorites: red velvet underground. i made it for a band – but they had a different concept in mind. they liked the collage but were too set on this other idea. i held on to it for a while and when a friend opened up the red velvet underground bakery, he nabbed it to use for that.
i like to sit down and make collages as a design-for-the-sake-of-design exercise, but i do get asked to make them for specific businesses or clients. i was recently asked to do one for a massage and shiatsu therapist. i showed it to a couple of people – um, first to the person that it’s for, naturally. but i showed it to another friend (@cleverkate of O’Reilly Creative) and loved her response: ”how do you make the macabre look so pretty?” (i don’t have an answer.)
